Extractions

SIMPLE

Extractions and oral surgery involve removing teeth or performing surgical procedures in the mouth to address various dental issues. This may include extracting severely damaged or decayed teeth, removing impacted wisdom teeth, preparing the mouth for dentures or braces, or addressing infections or cysts. Surgical techniques ensure minimal discomfort, and recovery typically involves following post-operative care instructions to promote healing and prevent complications.

Tooth Extractions

At some stage of their lives, most people will encounter the need to have one or more teeth extracted due to various reasons such as severe decay, damage from trauma, gum disease, or orthodontic treatment. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia, where only the immediate area around the tooth is numbed, allowing the patient to remain awake throughout with minimal discomfort. In other cases, especially for complex extractions or in patients with anxiety, general anesthesia may be preferred to ensure complete unconsciousness and painlessness during the procedure.

Local Anaesthetic

An injection is administered into the gum near the tooth to be removed, completely numbing the area to ensure the patient feels no pain during the extraction. Throughout the procedure, the patient remains awake and alert, experiencing only mild pressure as the dentist works to gently remove the tooth. This approach allows for a comfortable experience while ensuring effective removal of the tooth without discomfort.

Intravenous Sedation

Ivory Dental offers intravenous sedation for patients who experience significant nervousness or require extensive procedures like oral surgery, implants, or wisdom tooth removal.
Our experienced visiting consultant anaesthetist administers sedation via an injection in the back of your hand, supplemented with oxygen for comfort. Throughout the procedure, you will enter a relaxed, sleep-like state while our team monitors your well-being closely. Upon completion of the treatment, you will awaken feeling refreshed, akin to having had a short nap.
In contrast to general anesthesia, sedation is safer and can be performed within our dental practice. You can return home directly afterward, although we advise having a companion accompany you. One of the advantages of sedation is its ability to provide a comfortable experience without memory of the dental procedure, effectively reducing anxiety associated with future visits.

Frequently Asked Question

Is a simple tooth extraction painful?

A simple extraction is generally not painful. Your dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the area before removing the tooth, so you’ll only feel slight pressure—not pain—during the procedure. Mild discomfort afterward is normal and can be managed with prescribed pain relief and proper aftercare.

Recovery usually takes about 3 to 5 days, depending on your body’s healing process. During this time, it’s important to follow your dentist’s post-care instructions—avoid smoking, using straws, and eating hard foods—to help prevent complications like dry socket and ensure proper healing.
